SMALL SIDED GAMES (SsG)

WHY SMALL SIDED GAMES?

THIS IS A DIRECTIVE HANDED DOWN BY THE FFA WITH REGARDS TO THE CONCEPT AND ADOPTION OF SSG. AFTER A MEETING HELD AT THE OFFICES OF ESFA, IT WAS AGREED THAT WE BEGIN THIS CONCEPT STARTING IN 2008 WITH OUR UNDER 6 AND UNDER 7 TEAMS.

SSG ARE ALSO PLAYED IN OTHER COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD SUCH AS ENGLAND, IRELAND, SCOTLAND, GERMANY, FRANCE AND KOREA TO NAME A FEW.

BELOW ARE JUST SOME OF THE REASONS THIS CONCEPT HAS BEEN ADOPTED AND THE BENEFITS IT WILL BRING TO OUR JUNIORS.

SSG ARE DESIGNED TO ASSIST WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SKILLS OF YOUNG PLAYERS IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF COACHES WHO HAVE UNDERTAKEN A COACHING COURSE AT GRASS ROOTS LEVEL. SSG BENEFITS OUR CHILDREN BY MAKING EARLY CONTACT WITH THE FOOTBALL AND HAVING AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE.

WHAT ARE SMALL SIDED GAMES?

THEY ARE FOOTBALL GAMES WITH FEWER PLAYERS PLAYING ON SMALLER SIZED FIELDS. THEY ARE FUN GAMES WHICH ENCOURAGE PLAYERS TO HAVE MORE TOUCHES ON THE BALL AND THIS ASSISTS IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SSG?

  • MORE TOUCHES OF THE BALL BY ALL PLAYERS IN A SMALLER FIELD
  • MORE SHOTS AT GOAL
  • NO GOAL KEEPERS WHICH ENABLES ALL PLAYERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SCORE
  • ABILITY TO MAKE THE SAME DECISION OVER AND OVER AGAIN
  • THE BALL IS IN PLAY MORE OFTEN
  • IMPROVEMENT OF QUALITY OF PLAY WHICH LEADS TO HIGHER SELF ESTEEM AND THE RETENTION OF PLAYERS TO OUR GAME
  • LESS PRESSURE ON COACHES, PLAYERS AND PARENTS
  • THE EMPHASIS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS RATHER THAN THE EMPHASIS ON WINNING OR LOSING
